General Job Function:

The Assistant Mechanic coordinates and performs mechanical repairs and maintenance of District facilities and equipment. Also, responsible assisting the mechanic with the implementation and documentation of the District Safety program.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Follows a preventive maintenance schedule for District facilities, equipment and vehicles
  • Makes repairs as necessary to facilities, vehicles and equipment.
  • Knowledge of the Districts Safety Program.
  • Assist with providing instruction in the proper use and care of shop equipment, spray equipment and driver safety as directed by the supervisor.
  • Assist with conducting safety inspections of District facility including shop, office, equipment, vehicles and grounds.
  • Assist with maintaining all District safety records in compliance with Illinois OSHA standards.
  • Assist with proper disposal of District equipment.
  • Assist with shop projects consisting of routine maintenance and repairs of equipment and vehicles.
  • Performs all duties as assigned.

EXPERIENCE/ABILITIES/SKILLS

  • Ability to repair and operate equipment.
  • Ability to operate common machine tools and to do light welding.
  • General knowledge of maintenance and repairs.
  • Must be able to work independently and responsibly to organize and conduct activities in the shop; able to make accurate observations and keep detailed records on vehicles and equipment.
  • Ability to use computerized automotive scan equipment and software.
  • Ability to learn the general principles and techniques of mosquito control, including the proper use of pesticides and safety precautions.
  • Must be able to read, write and communicate with the public and co-workers. Ability to lift up to 75 pounds, manipulate small tools, stand for long periods and work in confined spaces.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes, or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals.
  • The employee is frequently exposed to risk of electrical shock and vibration.
  • The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, high, precarious places, and outside weather conditions.
  • The Assistant Mechanic may be exposed to: pesticides, communicable diseases, poison oak and other health hazards.
  • Must be professional and handle all conflict and provide resolutions to problems that may arise.

EDUCATION

  • Education equivalent to High School graduation.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in the maintenance and repair of automotive equipment.
  • Possession of a valid Illinois driver’s license, clean driving record and must meet minimum requirements to be insurable with the District’s insurance carrier; must maintain valid license and insurability throughout employment.
