2022 Field and Laboratory Report
The average cumulative total for all rain gauges which were reported from April 17th to October 3rd was 22.71 inches. This is about average for the season. However, the second half of the season was extremely wet starting at the end of June. One of the rain gauges located in the Southern Division (South Chicago Heights) was almost double the average. Temperatures were average for the season.
Field Operations
A total of 79,648 adult Culex spp. collected from 30 Gravid Traps, an average of 18.20 mosquitos per tap per night. Of these 79,648 Culex spp., 54,758 were tested for West Nile Virus via Rapid Analyte Measurement Platform (RAMP).
A BG Pro trap was set out at a location to collect Aedes spp specifically Aedes albopictus It was set out for a total of 45 trap nights and collected 132 mosquitos. Of these 132 collected, there were 65 Culex spp. 52 Aedes vexans 15Aedes aponicus There was no Aedes albopictus found, but a total of 157 collected from 12 Gravid traps this season.
Laboratory Function:
Laboratory personnel provide District management with information for planning and conducting an effective and efficient mosquito control program. They survey the larval and adult mosquito populations and test adult mosquitos for the presence of West Nile Virus.
Larval Mosquito Survey:
Larvarciding is our primary mosquito control activity. This method involves locating mosquito breeding sites and killing them before they can become a nuisance or transmit diseases. Field Operators take larval samples from some of these locations and return them to the lab for identification. During the 2022 season the laboratory identified a total of 357 larva samples from 129 sources. A total of 15 species were identified. From these 357 samples, 100 (28.01%) were Culex restuans 95 (26.61%) were Aedes vexans and 68 (19.05%) were Culex pipiens
A total of 1,438 pools were tested for West Nile Virus using the RAMP system. 116 (0.08%) of these were positive for West Nile Virus from 21 locations. As of November 1st, 2022, there were 29 confirmed human cases reported in the state of Illinois, 9 were in Cook County and 0 were within SCCMAD oundaries
