- A minimum of 10 years prior experience in pest management of with some time spent in mosquito control or a minimum of 3 years’ experience with a Mosquito Abatement District or municipal mosquito organization. Possess a valid Applicator License from the Illinois Department of Agriculture. Possess a valid Driver’s License.

General Job Function:
The Mechanical Specialist coordinates and performs mechanical repairs and maintenance of District facilities and equipment. Also, responsible for the implementation and documentation of the District Safety program.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Plans and follows a preventive maintenance schedule for District facilities, equipment and vehicles.
- Contracts or makes repairs as necessary to facilities, vehicles and equipment
- Responsible for District Safety Program; insuring employees are properly trained in all safety procedures and programs while working at the facility.
- Provides instruction in the proper use and care of shop equipment, spray equipment and driver safety. Provides safety equipment and instruction on its proper use.
- Conducts safety inspections of District facility including shop, office, equipment, vehicles and grounds.
- Maintains all District safety records in compliance with Illinois OSHA standards.
- Responsible for budgeting, purchasing, record keeping and preparation of proposals for the purchase of District equipment, tools, spray equipment, vehicles and supplies for equipment and facilities maintenance.
- Contracts with outside agencies for disposal of District equipment.
- Schedules shop projects consisting of routine maintenance and repairs of equipment and vehicles. As a member of the support team, assists and supports technicians, vector biologists, administrative assistant and Director and accomplishes field work, facility and equipment maintenance as needed.
- Performs any and all duties as assigned.
EXPERIENCE/ABILITIES/SKILLS
- Ability to repair, research and design and operate equipment.
- Ability to plan, estimate and lay out construction projects.
- Ability to operate common machine tools and to do light welding.
- General knowledge of maintenance and repairs.
- Must be able to work independently and responsibly to organize and conduct activities in the shop; able to make accurate observations and keep detailed records on vehicles and equipment.
- Ability to use computerized automotive scan equipment and software.
- Ability to learn the general principles and techniques of mosquito control, including the proper use of pesticides and safety precautions.
- Must be able to read and write capably and tactfully communicate with the general public and co-workers. Manipulate small tools, stand for long periods, and work in confined spaces.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes, or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals.
- The employee is frequently exposed to risk of electrical shock and vibration.
- The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, high, precarious places, and outside weather conditions.
- The Mechanic may be exposed to pesticides, communicable diseases, poison oak and other health hazards; inclement weather conditions.
- Must be professional and handle all conflict and provide resolutions to problems that may arise.
- Must have the ability to pass all required pesticide license exams deemed necessary from the Illinois Department of Agriculture.
- Physical agility and body strength to lift objects weighing up to 75 pounds.
- Physically able to sit, stand, walk, bend and stair climb frequently.
EDUCATION
- Education equivalent to High School graduation.
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in the maintenance and repair of automotive equipment.
- Possession of a valid Illinois driver’s license, clean driving record and must meet minimum requirements to be insurable with the District’s insurance carrier; must maintain valid license and insurability throughout employment.
