The South Cook County Mosquito Abatement District (SCCMAD) is notifying residents that two human cases of West Nile virus (WNV) have been reported within the South Cook County area.
The cases serve as an important reminder that West Nile virus remains an active public health concern during peak mosquito season. SCCMAD is urging residents to take precautions to protect themselves, their families, and their communities from mosquito bites.
Residents Are Urged to “Fight the Bite”
SCCMAD recommends that residents take the following steps to reduce their risk:
- Use an EPA-registered insect repellent when spending time outdoors.
- Wear long sleeves and long pants when possible, particularly during periods of high mosquito activity.
- Eliminate standing water around homes and businesses where mosquitoes can breed. Empty water from flowerpots, buckets, birdbaths, children’s toys, tires, and other containers.
- Keep doors and windows closed or screened to prevent mosquitoes from entering homes.
- Maintain swimming pools and other recreational water sources properly.
- Report areas of significant mosquito activity or potential mosquito breeding sites to the appropriate local mosquito control agency.
